Nomad Visa 2026 — What Changed This Year, Country by Country

2026 was the first year where "digital-nomad visa" stopped being novelty news and started being normal infrastructure. Over 60 jurisdictions now have some form of remote-worker visa. That's good — and also a lot to track. Here's a condensed year-in-review of what moved.

Portugal — DTV stable, NHR 2.0 still the draw#

The Digital Nomad Visa (D8) remains one of the most popular paths into Europe. Minimum income requirement is currently around €3,280/month (4× Portuguese minimum wage), application processed at consulate then converted to residence permit on arrival.

The bigger change for 2025–2026: NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) was replaced by IFICI (the "Scientific Research and Innovation" regime). The new regime is narrower — roles must broadly relate to R&D or specific sectors — but the ones who qualify still get a 20% flat rate for 10 years.

Spain — DNV tightened on remote employment proof#

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa requires either W2-style employment or freelance contracts proving ≥80% foreign clients. 2026 updates:

• Stricter checks on the foreign-employment letter (must explicitly permit remote work from Spain)
• Beckham Law rate confirmed at 24% for most applicants
• Processing times shortened in major consulates (Madrid/Mexico City especially)

Italy — DNV launched properly this time#

Italy first announced its DNV in 2022 but didn't operationalize it. In 2024–2025, the implementing decree finally landed. In 2026:

• Minimum income: ~€28,000/year
• Valid 1 year, renewable
• Path to long-term residence after 5 years
• Family reunification allowed

Italy is now a genuine option, especially for those wanting smaller cities (Bologna, Florence) instead of the usual Lisbon/Barcelona.

Greece — still the underrated one#

• 50% income tax reduction for 7 years under the Greek DNV
• Minimum income ~€3,500/month
• Smooth application process, workable even without a lawyer
• Crete + Athens have meaningful nomad communities now

UAE — virtual working programme, 5-year Green Visa#

Dubai's Virtual Working Programme remains one of the simplest paths to 0% personal income tax jurisdiction for a nomad. The 5-year Green Visa (self-sponsorship) is the stickier option if you're committing to a longer base.

Japan — DNV limited to 6 months, no renewal#

Launched late-2024, Japan's DNV is 6 months, non-renewable, nationality-restricted (49 countries), and requires ¥10,000,000 ($65k) annual income. Great for a one-shot stint; not a residency solution.

Korea — Workation Visa (F-1-D)#

Korea's nomad visa launched in 2024. Valid 2 years, income threshold ~$64k, requires health insurance (SafetyWing-type policies work). Seoul and Busan are the main bases.

Latin America — mostly stable, Argentina is interesting#

• Argentina DNV: new in 2024, gaining traction as inflation makes BA extremely affordable
• Brazil DNV: $1,500/month minimum; Rio/Floripa especially
• Mexico: technically not a DNV but the Temporary Resident Visa (income-based) does the same job for 1–4 years
• Colombia: Migrante V DNV, income $684/month (yes, really), Medellín + Bogotá

Southeast Asia — Thailand's DTV is the sleeper hit#

Launched mid-2024, Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is 5 years multi-entry (180-day stays), ฿500,000 deposit or proof of remote employment. Low friction, works for digital nomads, soft-landed well in 2025. This is the most significant new issuance volume of any Asian program.

Insurance is a hidden requirement#

Nearly every DNV above requires health insurance coverage valid in the destination country, typically €30k+ medical coverage. Most nomad-focused policies (SafetyWing, Genki, Safety Toto) meet the letter of the requirement but read each consulate's specific wording.
