Overview

Berlin is the capital of Germany, as well as its largest city by both area and population. With 3.7 million inhabitants, it has the highest population within its city limits of any city in the European Union. The city is also one of the states of Germany, being the third-smallest state in the country by area. Berlin is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, bordering Brandenburg's capital Potsdam to the southwest. The urban area of Berlin has a population of over 4.6 million, making it the most populous in Germany. The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region has around 6.2 million inhabitants and is Germany's second-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr region, as well as the fifth-biggest metropolitan region by GDP in the European Union.

Verdict

Should you base here?

What this city's own numbers say about who it fits, how long you can realistically stay, and what to weigh before committing.

A good base for

  • Heavy remote work — median internet is fast enough for calls and uploads
  • Working out of cafés and coworking — there's a real scene here
  • People sensitive to air quality — the air reads clean

Less ideal for

  • Tight budgets — this is a premium-priced base
  • Treating it as a permanent base without tax planning — there's a residency-day threshold to watch

How long can you stay?

Comfortable for a few months at a time — the default entry is about 90 days. Stack longer with a visa run or a longer-stay permit.

Stay past about 183 days in a year and you may become a tax resident here — get advice before you do.

What to weigh first

  • BudgetPlan around it Monthly costs land around $3,200 — this is an expensive base.
