Bali
Bali is an Indonesian island and province and the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. East of Java and west of Lombok, the province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller offshore islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan to the southeast. The provincial capital, Denpasar, is the most populous city in the Lesser Sunda Islands and the second-largest, after Makassar, in Eastern Indonesia. The Denpasar metropolitan area is the extended metropolitan area around Denpasar. The upland town of Ubud in Greater Denpasar is considered as Bali's cultural centre. The province is Indonesia's main tourist destination, with a significant rise in tourism since the 1980s, and has become the country's area of overtourism. Tourism-related business makes up 80% of the Bali economy.

Arrival essentials
What you need on day one — eSIM, airport transfer, and which neighborhoods to base yourself in.
eSIM
Indolink (Indonesia) plan. Telkomsel is the most reliable local network — coverage in Ubud's rice fields can be spotty on smaller carriers.
Get an eSIM — AiraloAirport to city DPS
- Taxi — 45min / ≈ US$25 · Grab / Gojek work but pickup zones are restricted — official airport taxi is simpler
- Shuttle — 90min / ≈ US$10 · Perama / Kura-Kura shuttles to Ubud / Canggu — book ahead
Where to stay
Recommended
- Canggu (Berawa / Pererenan) — Surf + coworking hub — Berawa is busy, Pererenan calmer
- Ubud (Penestanan / Nyuh Kuning) — Jungle setting, yoga + remote-work scene; quieter than central Ubud
- Uluwatu — Cliff views, world-class surf, more spread out — scooter required
Worth knowing
- Kuta / Legian (for long stays) — Loud, party-focused, traffic-clogged — most nomads stay further north
